Council Overview

Girl Scouts San Diego serves 22,500 girls and 12,700 adult members. Girl Scouts is the world’s preeminent leadership development organization for girls, building girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place.

Every summer, girls arrive to summer camp excited for new experiences. As a Camp Counselor, it’s your responsibility to encourage them to be courageous, demonstrate compassion and leadership, and participate in energetic activities that build memories for a lifetime. You want to have a positive impact on them as they build a stronger sense of courage, confidence, and character.

Girl Scouts San Diego is looking for dedicated and qualified staff members for our 2018 summer camps. Seasonal camp positions are open for our two resident camps located in Julian, CA. Camp positions will start on or about June 14, 2018 and will end August 18, 2018. It is preferred that our dynamic staff have experience working with youth, but it is not required.

Camp Winacka - Located in Julian, CA, this rustic camp features a swimming and equestrian program, high adventure programs, environmental education and arts and crafts. Traditional camp activities, along with specialist programs are what makes Camp Winacka unique. Campers and staff sleep in open air cabins, platforms tents or on cots under the stars.

Camp Whispering Oaks - Located in Julian, CA, this camp features arts and crafts, a sport field, basketball court, challenge course, and astronomy programming. The camps season begins mid-June and ends the middle of August. Campers and staff enjoy modern cabins with bunk beds and electricity.


Job Summary

In conjunction with Challenge Course Director, plans and coordinates facilitation of high and low ropes courses; oversees equipment management and serves as support facilitator.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Oversees high and low ropes course equipment, usage and facilitators.
  • Teaches staff and campers the skills necessary for a fun and safe experience including personal and group health and safety, care and use of equipment, emergency procedures, etc.
  • In conjunction with challenge course director, supervises all activities connected with the Challenge Course to ensure safety of participants, including but not limited to, executing safe and effective programming, using good judgment when making independent decisions and instructing participants in the proper use of all course elements and equipment.
  • Cultivates learning among participants and groups, including technical skills as well as the experiential aspects of the course. Facilitates participants processing experiences in order to integrate what has been learned.
  • In conjunction with challenge course director, completes inspections and post-course reports in a timely manner.
  • Works as team with other facilitators in planning, facilitating, operating and evaluating the course.
  • Develops and leads teambuilding sessions as scheduled with Unit Staff.
  • Collaborates with unit directors and program specialists with supplies, equipment, staffing and activities.
  • Ensures that all challenge course activities comply with Safety Activity Checkpoints and ACA requirements.
  • Responsible for inventory, inspection, repair and check in/out of camp equipment related to challenge course activities.
  • Develops and delivers a Challenge Course program that is appropriate to the age and abilities of the campers. Ensures appropriate progression of all activities.
  • Assists with luggage delivery and camper pick up and drop off on change days.
  • Assists in the general operation of camp as assigned by the camp director or assistant director; files itinerary with supervisor before each trip.
  • Maintains clear and positive written and verbal communication with all internal and external clients.
  • Contributes to the diversity emphasis of the council by ensuring that all materials, activities and programs are sensitive to and reflective of the interest, values and needs of persons of all racial/ethnic groups, cultures, religions and abilities.
  • Performs physical tasks of position, including but not limited to tying specific knots, belaying campers, moving from element to element, setting up and taking down climbing ropes and climbing structures, as needed.
  • Adheres to all council policies and procedures.
  • Observes all safety precautions and complies with all council health and safety rules and procedures.
  • Transports campers and staff, as needed.
  • Perform other duties, as assigned.

Essential Requirements

To perform this position successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.   • ACCT Level 1 certification, or documented experience of 2-3 years of rock climbing and/or challenge course facilitation.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must be able to obtain current First Aid/CPR certification by first day of campers’ arrival.
  • Must submit health history record prior to first day of work.
  • Attends staff meetings.
  • Attends staff and in-service training during the summer.
  • Ability to interact with all age levels.
  • Valid drivers’ license, proof of insurance and access to reliable transportation. Daily and/or occasional travel may be required. Must be comfortable driving narrow, winding mountain roads with passengers in mini or cargo vans.
  • Willingness to accept the beliefs and principles of the Girl Scout Movement and acceptance of the relevant and compelling benefits of Girl Scouting.

Personal computer and printers, telephone, fax machine, copier, audiovisual equipment, and other miscellaneous office equipment.


Physical Requirements

  • Ability to climb and withstand heights with a high comfort level.
  • Ability to stoop, kneel, bend, reach, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, work with fingers, grasp, feel, talk, hear, and perform repetitive motions.
  • Ability to perform light work exerting up to 40 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
  • Heavy visual acuity required performing such activities as securing harnesses, helmets and belay devices and tying ropes.


Work Conditions

Activities occur both inside and outside and employee is subject to both environmental conditions; however, employee is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.
